four icons rather than 3

I would actually like to see that there are four icons rather than just three. I usually try to set up two connections at the same time. Thus one could drop and the other connected and it would only indicate it trying to reconnect while there is still a valid connection.

So you are suggestion there be a forth status type: where 1 or more connections are connecting, while 1 or more connections are also already connected? If so, it's certainly something we could look at implementing (or allowing people to make their own icon for).
