Routing Traffic For Websites

Hi,

When I connect to a VPN, there are certain websites I don't wish to go through the VPN tunnel

I read through the routing traffic post in the knowledge base. I went to Robtex.com to do a lookup for the IP list. It works for some small websites. However, there is this one shopping site called taobao.com, even after I set up routing for the IPs, and visit the website, it still detects my VPN's geolocation.

It bugs me because the website has a global version and a local version, I think if they detect a foreign ip, they would redirect you to the global version of the website where they show much less product to buy from. Thus, everytime before visiting the website, I need to disconnect the VPN, very inconvenient.

Is it because there are still some relevant IPs I haven't covered in the routing table? If so, is there a way to find a complete list of the IPs ? I try to use a few other whois lookup websites, but it seems that Robtex.com can find me the most Ips so far.

Maybe there are other solutions to this ?

Hi kyhily203,

I'm afraid there isn't a simple answer to this. There are some very advanced techniques around now to determine your geolocation, and they're not simple to circumnavigate on an individual basis. If the website is using some advanced techniques, you may need to do more than simply route the correct IPs, certain DNS servers may return different IP addresses so you may not be connecting to the correct IP for example.

Hi Eric,

So I just read this post as well, https://www.sparklabs.com/support/kb/ar ... -settings/

Would the split DNS setting solve this problem ?

In the split DNS setting, what does it mean by 'use vpn dns for vpn domains only', what is 'vpn domains' refer to ?

Regards,

Hi kyhily203,

In your case probably not as you are looking for the effective reverse of split DNS, something we are investigating adding in a future update.

As an example, if you edited your connection and went to Networking, set your DNS Mode to Split, and then set the DNS Domains to "google.com", whenever you visited a google website (for example google.com or images.google.com), that domain would be resolved via your VPN DNS server, however all other domains would be resolved by your local networks DNS.
