Hello together,

today I've bought a license of Viscosity and imported my running OpenVPN config.
With some small modifications the connection can be established but the vpn-Interface uses a apipa address.

I use a certificate based vpn Connection with these extra Settings:
Code: Select all
resolv-retry infinite
tls-client
keepalive 10 30
cipher AES-256-CBC
route-method exe
route-delay 30
dev-node {8F111A73-77AF-414E-9AF3-61A1C0957963}
the MTU is set to 1500 and the log output is:
Code: Select all

Hi cscholz,

Please try adding the following line to the Advanced commands section in your configuration:

ip-win32 netsh

This will force OpenVPN to do what Viscosity is trying to do in the first instance and hopefully resolve the issue you are facing.

I am having this exact problem as well. The standard OpenVPN client works. Viscosity on a Mac works. SecurepointSSL VPN works. But Viscosity for windows will not get an IP address. I've tried the netsh fix and that just gets me a different error. Netsh error = 1 now appears 3 or 4 times in the log.

I know the server is configured right as the other machines/programs connect. It appears as if Viscosity cannot force windows to update the IP address for the adapter and/or the route to take to get to the remote network. If viscosity is simply calling the OpenVPN program to make the connection and the OpenVPN client tool is working, why is Viscosity failing?

Hi languy,

The OpenVPN method of setting dhcp unfortunately can have problems in Win7 & 8 due to updates to these OSes. We are continually working on trying to perfect Viscosity to recover from these dhcp failures.

We would love to help you get this problem solved in your case though. If you are able to post a copy of your configuration (exported from Viscosity, please feel free to mask any sensitive information), and a copy of your OpenVPN log using and not using the ip-win32 netsh command, we can hopefully track down the problem.

Hi

I am facing the same issue and when I try execute the failing netsh command manually, the error message is that administrator rights are required.

Hi PPrinz,

Netsh commands do require Administrator rights to execute. If you are trying to execute it from command line, you will need to make sure you start cmd.exe with administrator rights.

Hello, I upgraded to Windows 8.1 last night and am also having this problem. Adding the 'ip-win32 netsh' command does not fix the issue.

Also, after Viscosity connects (without obtaining an IP address) and I disconnect, the Viscosity virtual adapter gets disabled and I have to re-enable it (though I still can't obtain an IP address).

As others have mentioned, connecting using openvpn-gui works fine..

Hi Steve,

The log with the ip-win32 netsh command indicates that OpenVPN has completely ignored the command. Are you able to export your connection profile from Viscosity (Select the connection in Preferences, click the Cog and select Export Connection), then post a copy of config.conf, there might be another option causing issues.

It has also just crossed my mind, in the past some users had issues when they had both OpenVPN-GUI and Viscosity installed, where the default TAP adapter was interfering with the Windows DHCP stack. Can you please try going to the Adapter Settings, and disabling any TAP or other adapters you have enabled that are listed as disconnected, this has fixed similar issues for users in the past.

Regards,

Eric

Hi Eric, thanks for the response. I had a copy of Sophos SSL VPN installed, which is based on a reference OpenVPN implementation. Please note that Sophos was installed prior to my upgrade from Windows 8 -> 8.1, and both Sophos and Viscosity worked fine.

I disabled the Sophos connection and noticed that the Viscosity adapter was also disabled (again), so I re-enabled it.

Viscosity now works (my main concern here, so now I'm happy), and after rebooting, Viscosity is still working.

Not sure why Viscosity and Sophos can't coexist under Windows 8.1, but I guess I don't care any more :-)

Thanks again,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the reply. We'll definitely have a look and see if we can replicate this issue, great to hear Viscosity is working again though!

Eric
