I've been using Viscosity for some time with my own MacBook (macOS 10.12.4), connecting to multiple NETGEAR routers with built-in VPN service (all routers are running the most current firmware). I'm trying to setup my mom's MacBook with the same configuration. Even though I've configured things the same way, her setup will not work. The only significant difference is my mom's Mac is running Mac OS X 10.11.6 (it's a 2008 model that cannot be upgraded to 10.12). I can connect my MacBook fine to both my home router (NETGEAR R8500) and hers (NETGEAR R6400) but her Mac will not work when trying to connect to either router. I should also note that both Macs were used at the same location (192.168.130.x) so the host network for the client connections can also be ruled out.

I copied-and-pasted the section of the Console log that seems to apply to the connection starting up and shutting down. Below that, I’ve copied the Viscosity VPN log. Hopefully something in here is useful. I’ve used xx to mask out identifying information but otherwise these are contiguous sections of the logs. Oops, I just realized the two logs I captured were not from identical sessions — sorry the timestamps do not line up.

There’s only one other thing that seems off here. Between the times when the VPN client connects and disconnects, items in the Mac’s menu bar jump around as if another icon is being added and then removed. Or maybe it’s being added and then the process unexpectedly quits so fast that the icon never becomes visible. Happens every time I try to connect on my mom’s Mac. I’ve uploaded a very small clip that demonstrates this kind of “icon jumping”. You can see it here:

Any suggestions welcome.

Hi urzasnet,

Does the issue persist if you temporarily disable or uninstall any other networking or security software that could be interfering with network function (it looks like Sophos is installed)?

Do you see the same behaviour with the latest beta version of Viscosity?

Cheers,
