I have had Witopia / Viscosity for a week now and love it to bits! I am a UK expat living in the mddle east and have been using Viscosity to watch BBC iPlayer without any problem.

Today I tried to watch some content on HULU the US equivalent. However I was blocked and got the message “Based on your IP address we noticed that you are trying to access HULU through an anonymous proxy tool. HULU is not currently available outside the US...

This raises 2 issues for me

Firstly does anyone now of a way around this block?

Secondly (and most importantly for me) if there is no way around this what is the likelyhood of the BBC / ITV / Channel 4 following suit in the UK and blocking “anonymous proxy tool” IP addys as this would make Witopia virtually useless for what I want it for!

Hi Floyd3592,

Well Hulu would have identified the IP address of the particular server you are connected to and blocked it. There is no way around this except to connect to a different server (or if WiTopia assign it a different IP address that isn't blocked).
Secondly (and most importantly for me) if there is no way around this what is the likelyhood of the BBC / ITV / Channel 4 following suit in the UK
Well that would depend on how aggressive they want to be. If they want to, yes, they can block VPN providers based off their server's IP addresses. VPN providers can always change their IP ranges to stay one step ahead, but it's a cat and mouse game.

The only other option is to setup your own server (e.g. sign up for a dedicated or VPS server with a hosting provider) and run your own OpenVPN server. It's unlikely you'd be blocked (they'd have no way of knowing this is a VPN server), however it requires a high level of technical knowledge. You're probably best sticking with WiTopia and just sending them a support request asking them whether alternate VPN server you should connect to.

Cheers,
James

Thanks James

guess I'll just have to live without HULU and hope the UK don't become as "aggressive"! lol
