Hey there. China user here, connecting via Perfect Privacy. All works well, and Viscosity is a big improvement over Tunnelblick, for me, which was dropping connections a lot.

I am having a problem, which, admittedly, might not be down to Viscosity alone, but I was hoping that some of the people here might be more knowledgeable about these issues in general, and maybe there's a way to configure Viscosity to fix this.

I use a VPN to get to sites the Great Firewall blocks (facebook, twitter, toutube, etc.). It works fine...I can get to anything that way, now. The problem is, there are random sites I cannot get to when I'm on VPN. For example:

www.macrumors.com, www.albumartexchange.com, www.citibank.com

I've posted on the Perfect Privacy forums about this, and other PP users can see these sites when connected to VPN. This happens both when I use Viscosity, and when I use PPTP.

Does anyone know what could cause this problem, and/or if there is a way Viscosity can solve it?

Hi suzerain,

It sounds like a DNS issue to me. Make sure you are using the latest version of Viscosity (1.0.7) as it automatically flushes the DNS cache upon connecting/disconnecting. You should also make sure you have DNS support enabled for your connection (under the General tab when editing your connection).

You could also try manually flushing the cache after you have connected Viscosity to see if it makes a difference, by opening the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and running the following command:
dscacheutil -flushcache

You may want to check you don't have a proxy setup in the web browser you are using.

Finally, check with Perfect Privacy's support desk that DNS servers are being set for your connection (they should also be able to give you a few things to check).

Cheers,
James
